Unfortunately, the tissue sample was lost. Detective Raines said, “To me the tissue inside the car was an extension of the murder scene. The only way that the tissue would get from the murder scene to the car was to be carried by someone.”

District Attorney Romley said, “We had blood inside the car, and the blood type matched Bob Crane’s. We had the photograph that appeared very similar to the types of tissue found from the bloody crime scene, which was found on the pillow case. All of those things together, we thought were going to convince a jury.”

Since Carpenter was in California, a fugitive warrant was issued for Carpenter’s arrest. He called his wife and said, “They finally got me. I’m under arrest.” He told Mark Dawson, son of Richard Dawson, that he did not kill his best friend.

Carpenter’s trial was delayed for two years because he was being held in California for sexual misconduct with a minor. The trial of John Henry Carpenter lasted three days. On October 31, 1994, Carpenter was found not guilty of the murder of Bob Crane.

It seems a picture of the tissue wasn’t considered the same as the actual tissue to the jury. Jurors who were interviewed felt the evidence was circumstantial. They also didn’t care about the sex tape that was shown to them. They felt the tape was the participants’ own private business. If actual DNA had been found, it would have been different, said one juror. The blood samples were not properly preserved and had lessened with each testing over the years.

Four years after the trial ended, Carpenter died of a heart attack at the age of seventy-two. Mark Dawson felt that being under scrutiny for so many years and the trial itself took a toll on Carpenter. Dawson said that Carpenter was ruined after the trial.

Had he not had a sexual addiction and been killed at such a young age, there’s no telling where Crane’s career would have taken him. He was a natural performer and a great, likable comedic actor. Another Jack Lemmon? Very possibly.

Crane’s children from his two families have been divided for decades. In 1975 Crane added a codicil to his will, in effect disinheriting the three older children from his first marriage. He left them $5,000.00 each, and the remainder of his estate went to his second family. Also, Robert Crane and Scotty Crane fought bitterly over the portrayal of their father in the 2001 film Auto Focus.

Author Robert Graysmith says that Crane thought he was broke. Unbeknownst to Crane, his business manager Lloyd Vaughn had embezzled $100,000.00 from him. Crane also had no idea how valuable the percentage he owned in Hogan’s Heroes would have become. Had he lived, by 1990 Crane would have had 25 percent of $90 million. His other co-stars only got paid for the first six syndicated appearances.
